So I’ve been talking about that the current era as opposed to past times is about being more relationship and purpose-driven as a leader and creating cultures that are more holistic and humanised. How do you do that?
Well, one tip we give leaders is to measure yourself on 2 key dimensions and see how you rate yourself on this.
If you can imagine on a vertical axis, you’re rating yourself for assertiveness. So how clear, open, transparent, and direct can you be, with what you want, with what you need, with what’s not good enough, with what needs to change. It’s basically a sense of openness with conviction. That’s not enough, because sometimes that can be seen as, you know, overbearing or too confronting.
So the balancing factor is the 2nd dimension and we map it as a horizontal line. And that is your politeness level as a leader. So do you know how to tone down the enthusiasm as it were? Even if you’re upset, do you know how to regulate your emotions? Do you know about caution? Ultimately it’s about conveying a sense of respect in your communication. Even if it’s in delivering bad news or corrective feedback, it’s can you make the person feel so cared about and respected that it generates this key ingredient we know that creates high-performance in teams and organizations, which is psychological safety.
So on those 2 dimensions, rate yourself as a leader. I’d love to know what you think of them and where you are.
