Why Faster is Slower?

August 2, 2020

This video debunks the myth that busyness and constant jam packed agendas is the key to high performance work and effective leadership.

We know as leadership consultants that when leaders learn skills and tools for slowing down then their results speed up.

Tools and skills such as:

  • Reflective Learning journals for daily and/or weekly reflection
  • Slowing down the anxious, worry mind
  • Body work exercises to release stress and anxiety
  • Body exercises to be more Present

The benefit of actively scheduling time to slow down enhances a leader’s productivity due to better quality decisions and faster decision- making due to less stress, confusion and overwhelm, taxing the mind.

In short, clarity of thinking is achieved.

A second benefit of slowing down is that it opens up space for more presence and empathic connection in relationships.

We call this RQ or relationship intelligence.

This leads to better people leadership and staff engagement because staff and colleagues TRUST a leader who is more calm, clear and present to their needs and concerns.

Well, why is faster slower for leadership and professionals in general?

It’s because in, in the mode of constant doing, speed, jam packed agendas, what can happen, and we find this as leadership consultants in the mentoring that we do with senior leaders – you can actually suffer from overload and stretching yourself too thin. Not making clear decisions and basically it’s all because you’re exhausted.

So, the art and the skill that we try to impart to our mentees and to leaders, is the art of slowing down to speed up. By that I mean, do you take time out to recharge your batteries and really to quieten down the mind; the busy, worry, anxious mind. And what happens as a result of that is actually you speed up better decision making, faster decision making, higher quality interactions and relationships. Out of the box thinking also happens because you’ve actually calmed down your nervous system by quieting your mind.

How do you instil stillness into your day, so that you make better and faster decisions and you get better results more quickly as well?
